IDF Centurion, known in Hebrew as Sho't Kal - Victor in the Dual for the Golan Heighs, Yom Kippur War, 1973.Conceived at the height of WWII, the British Centurion was initially expected to counter the formidable Panthers and Tigers of Nazi Germany. But as the Cold War unfolded, it became more emblematic of the confrontation between the West and proxy allies of the Soviet Union in the Middle East. Israel acquired & modified large numbers of Centurions. The Israeli version of the Centurion was the Sho't Kal (in Hebrew Sho't means "Whip" & "Kal" meant the new, less fire prone, diesel engine model). Upgraded with a British 105 mm gun and American diesel engine, it earned its legendary status on the Golan Heights at an area known as the Valley of Tears. A heroic defense by 177 Israeli tanks against over 1,400 Syrian attacking tanks for 4 crucial days in Oct 1973 (until IDF reserve was mobilized) was key to Israel's survival and victory.
